Story -

4th grader, Martha, felt like her teacher was a drill sergeant always barking orders at the students and refusing to let them talk to explain situations. After her teacher attended a Positive Discipline training, Martha noticed a change in her.

Instead of the usual orders and lack of listening, Martha's teacher started asking the students questions to find out what happened after situations and she actually listened to them. Martha started to feel like her teacher cared about the students more and Martha felt more comfortable with her teacher because of this.

Story -

15-year-old Mark was upset with his friend and when he

came home, he ignored his mother when she asked him to

put his backpack away, as he dropped it in the entryway. He

stormed off to his room.

Mark then came down to get a snack and his mother joined

him in the kitchen. In a calm voice, she validated Mark's

feelings first, "Seems like you're upset about something." Mark

replied, "Yeah, I'm really upset." She then asked him, "What

happened?" and just closed her mouth and listened. Mark shared a bit of what was going on between him and his friend. After the conversation, he went and put his backpack away.
