Story -
8-year-old Debbie was excited when she returned home after her Girl Scout meeting. Her mother was starting dinner. Debbie enthusiastically burst into the kitchen waving the latest badges she had received. Her mother asked Debbie to take her excitement into the other room because she needed to focus on dinner. Debbie's shoulders sank, her smiled turned into a frown, as she slowly walked into the other room.
What Debbie's mother could have done instead was to Pay Attention to Debbie's excitement, taking a few minutes to connect with her by looking at the badges. Then, she could ask her set them down in the other room, so they wouldn't get dirty, and come back to tell her all about the meeting and receiving the badges, while her mom cooked dinner (better yet, invite Debbie to help her with dinner so they could connect even more!).
